Beginning in the mid 1990s, post-modernist and post-nationalist theories have been presented and they also gained currency among students of modern East Asian history. As a result, new intellectual discourses on coloniality, fascism and postwar East Asia have been presented. Among them, Masafumi Yonetani and his research group “Colony/Overcoming Modernity” have led the project of rewriting the intellectual history of empire/colony by shedding new light on the unexplored writings of former leftist intellectuals in late 1930s and early 1940s East Asia.
Yonetani and his research group have grappled into the question of discovering the momentum of radical thinking from reform intellectuals in East Asia. As part of such endeavors, they also have paid special attention to Korean intellectuals in the interwar period. Recent studies of Yi Kwang Su and former leftist intellectuals by Jo Kwan Ja and Hong Jong Wook show this trend well. However, their “East Asian’ intellectual history beyond the binary formation of colony/empire and collaboration/resistance reveals intellectuals limits. The presence of China, conceptualized the inside as well as the outside of the empire-colony structure, is not clearly articulated in their writings. It generates problems in understanding how concepts of ‘reform’ and ‘modernization’ should be understood in relation to the expansion of colonial structure in Yonetani and the “Colony/Overcoming Modernity” research group.
