The purpose of this study is to identify the communication structure and linguistic characteristics of Twitter, and analyze the terms of address used by netizens on the Korean Twitter. In section 2, we examine the communication structure and linguistic characteristics of Twitter, which is one of the most popular SNS (Social Network Service) in cyberspace. In section 3, we analyze the usages of Korean terms of address with the sociolinguistic methods of case study and statistical analysis. Unlike previous studies, in this paper, we investigate not only the basic usages but also the factors, the backgrounds, and the functions of using address forms. In the process of this analysis, we confirm that the terms of address show user’s attitudes of intimacy, good feeling, and empathy to the recipient across the basic functions of them. We also find out that speakers have a strategic intent to adjust and criticize the mind and behavior of opponent or recipient while using the terms of address.
