The activities of the Dongmin-hwe Association( 同民會) can be considered as a Suffrage movement that continued during the Japanese Occupation period. The Dongmin-hwe Association was composed of Korean and Japanese suffragists residing in Korea. And they developed a movement that combined the association with other three groups - the National Association(國民協會), the Gabja Club(甲子俱樂部), and the Daejeong Friendly Society(大正親睦會). Executives of this association took the most active part at every stage of the suffrage movement. Therefore, having a proper understanding of the role the Dongmin-hwe Association played at the time would be crucial in understanding the history of the suffrage movement in Korea in general.
This paper focuses on how the collective movements of the four groups were made possible, what kind of political meanings those movements had, and what sort of relationship they had with the Japan and Joseon become one (內鮮融和) movement which the Dongmin-hwe Association also developed. Suffragist forces are extracted by analyzing the executive officers of the Dongmin-hwe Association, and their reasoning and motives are investigated through the four groups collective movements. The political purpose that triggered the association’s Japan and Joseon become one movement will also be examined.
