This study is purported to investigate Rev. Han Kyung-Jik"s exegetical interpretations and pastoral applications of New Testament messages. Three perspectives are sorted out for this purpose. First of all, he employed the theological frame of the so-called evangelicalism as a thoroughgoing principle, centering on the gospel of redemption and rebirth. Secondly, his historical experiences of loosing his north Korean hometown and resettling in south Korean new land appears to serve as another matrix in which his hermeneutic orientation has been embedded. Finally, his abundant pastoral activities are seen to have enriched his biblical hermeneutics in a well-balanced integral world-view.
Based on the historical matrix and theological vision, his interpretations of New Testament texts reveal several characteristic points. In both macroscopic and microscopic realms, his biblical hermeneutics developed so far as to highlight dynamic evangelical themes in a straightforward manner, and to tackle peripheral elements hidden in deep interpretive contexts. The midrashic method which strings together a series of biblical passages is often detected as Rev. Han"s primary exegetic skill. Yet, on the other side, he was also confronted with the historical task to wrestle with the misguided human thoughts, while simultaneously getting into the hassle of doctrinal apologetics. Especially, his personal conviction of anti-communism is highly influential and consistently predominant in his exegesis and preaching activities. This double-edged facet somehow offers a yardstick to evaluate the light and shadow of his career and biblical hermeneutics.
