The major themes and the authors’ world views of the five fairy tales selected for this study are as follows:
Two of the fairy tales, 〈The Salmon〉 and 〈River Boy〉, are similar in that they depend on the image of the river as the death motif. In these two works, the death does not end in itself; rather, it is transmitted through genetic traits or internalized through the same experiences.
In another two fairy tales, 〈Charlotte’s Web〉 and 〈A Hen Outside the Court〉, the meaning of life is accomplished and expanded through the relationships with other people. Protagonists in these two tales never stop pursuing the meaning of life to the end of their life and their death embodies sacrifice for other people.
The last fairy tale, 〈Turk Everlasting〉 represents two different world views; one is embodied in Turk’s family where the circulation of life stands still and the other is portrayed in Winny’s family in which life goes on with its circulatory pattern and finally reaches death as its end-point. The protagonist of the work, Winny, taking Turk’s advice, completes his holistic life and meets death, surrounded by his loving family.
Seen from an educational perspective, insight on the completion of life can be drawn through the reflection on death that presents opposing world views.
