Objective: The aim of this study is to investigate the chararicstics of hand/wrist motions of two different types of computer task: CAD-oriented and genreal office task. Background: VDT task is known to have high risks of upper-limb musculoskeletal disorders. High repetitive motion of fingers, hand and wrist is one of the main risk factor in addition to the improper working postures and sustained static postures. It is presumed that the characteristics of dfferent task types might affect the repetitive motions of hand and wrist. Method: 11 CAD-oriented workers and 3 general office task workers participated in this study. We recorded their job approximately for 1 hour and took observed the motions for 10 min per participant. The type of task and motions for right and left fingers and wrist were defined and the frequencies of each motion were recored. Results: It was shown that CAD worker spent more time in mouse use as compared to the general office task. CAD workers took hand/wrist motions more than 30 times per minute, which is presumed to be high-risk to their wrist. However, large variation of wrist deviation was less than 4 time per minute. Conclusion: The hand/wrist motion of VDT task is affected by the task characteristics. CAD task workers are found to be exposed to high repetitive motions of hadn/wrist.
