Republic of Korea and People’s Republic of China be long to Chinese character cultural sphere. In the history, both Korea and China have been communicated together for a long time. Therefore, both countries also had cultural exchanges including language exchange.
Since the time Chinese characters were introduced to Korea, Chinese characters were official notation in Korea until the end of the Joseon Dynasty period(1392-1910).It gave a lot of influences to Korean society. Therefore, a lot of Sino-Korean words using Chinese characters were created. Currently, more than half of Korean vocabularies are Sino-Korean words. However, when people translate between Korean and Chinese, a lot of mistranslations come out because Sino-Korean words and Chinese words are in the same shape; however Korean and Chinese people’s ways of expressions aren’t same, which is the major source of creating mistranslations between Korean and Chinese.
To describe, Korea and China’s same shape words can be divided into 2types; same shape words with same meaning and same shape words with different meaning. The basic reasons of mistranslating between Korean and Chinese can be described as 3 causes; differences of word class, differences of meaning, and differences of expressions. In order to divide into detailed articles, differences of meaning can be divided into similar words and same shape words with different meaning. Also difference of usage of same shape of words, words with same meaning or different meaning, in Korea and China also can be incorporated into detailed articles.
For here, I focused on arranging and analyzing summaries of mistranslating between Korean and Chinese. For ways and techniques of translating, I expect further researches.
