This study explores the historical transformation of China’s factional politics. The analytical methods for this is to study on typology of ‘faction’ and ‘factionalism’ from the perspective of motivation and dynamics. In addition, this research classifies ‘real’ and ‘personal’, and ‘degenerative’, ‘competitive’, and ‘cooperative’ in terms of motivation and dynamics respectively. Next, this study identifies type of factional politics according to the major period of Chinese politics. The periods are classified in details into as follows: before from the formation of Chinese Communist Party to Mao Zedong and Deng Xiaoping in power; and Jiang Zemin and Hu Jintao in power.
The result of this study demonstrates that Chinese factional politics have been transformed according to the change of conditions of political environments from ‘personal/degenerative’, via ‘personal/competitive’ to the mixture of ‘real/personal’ and ‘competitive/cooperative’. Moreover, it is expected that ‘real’ and ‘cooperative’ features will be more strengthened in terms of motivation and dynamics respectively.
