As marriage is an institution established by God, there is God"s intention in marriage. Husbands and wives should pursue satisfaction and happiness through their marriage life, but human satisfaction and happiness cannot be the essence of marriage. Nevertheless, husbands and wives pursue satisfaction and happiness as crucial conditions of their marriage life mainly because churches have neglected value education on the essence of marriage. The seriousness of contemporary marital distress is looming as a crisis of churches consisting mainly of families. The collapse of a family through divorce is a crisis not only to the family but also to the church. The present researcher assumed that marital distress and divorce are caused by the absence of marital education in churches, and wrote this thesis in order to emphasize that churches should carry out actively marital education based on Christian values.
The purpose of this study was to find core values for marital education in Martin Luther"s view on marriage. There have been many studies on Luther in Korea, but few of them were about his ideas on family and marital relationship. Thus, this study is expected to trigger various subsequent studies on Luther"s understanding of family and husband wife relationship. The researcher analyzed Luther"s view on marriage from the viewpoint of God"s gift and secularity, and divorce from the viewpoint of God"s love and forgiveness. In addition, this study suggested two conditions for maintaining marital stability, which are the vocation of serving the spouse based on God"s calling and the office as a pastor and teacher for parenting. Based on the results of this study, lastly, the researcher sorted out and presented core values for church based marital education. Marital education based on the results of this study is expected to have a positive effect on husbands and wives" faith oriented thinking and their enhanced marital satisfaction and stability.
