Recently global automotive companies are proceeding study for cost-saving and VOC(Volatile Organic Compounds) reduction, and one of solution is elimination of painting and coating to reach the goal. Main target is the painting on the automotive-interior parts, which are mostly made of plastic material and soft textiles. Concern of the article is deletion of plastic-painting, and Polypropylene is the widely-used material for automotive-interior parts. (Crash pad, Floor Console, Door Trim, Pillar Trim and so on)
The number of application of Polypropylene (PP) compounds are consistently increasing in automotive industry and other industries, because they have advantages in recyclability, weight, and cost compared to other engineering resins. However, PP compounds have significantly less resistance to scratch and mar damage, which is a key property in interior automotive application such as instrument panels, door panel, consoles, and pillar trim. Our purpose of study is actively looking for ways to improve the scratch and mar resistance of PP compounds. We have done various researches to know the scratch resistance depends on many factors, including PP resin type, filler content, filler size, rubber type, additive, and so on. Then, to improve the scratch-resistance in the parts of automotives, factors of engineering drawing (material composition, surface-pattern, color, and gloss) are considered from a perspective of automotive engineers. Finally, we found the solutions to improve the scratch and mar resistance of PP compounds for automotive interior parts.
