North Korea delivered the story of anti-Japanese guerrillas through the art form of opera and encapsulated “collectivism” and :leader and mass: which are two of the fundamental ideas of North Korea. The experience and education of these ideas were more effective because it was done through “emotion training” rather than by actual learning, serving as a crucial mechanism to create a unified collective emotion. One of the most prominent forms of emotion training is “Sea of Blood”-style revolutionary operas.
“Collectivism” and “leader and mass” was selected as North Korea’s two fundamental ideas not only because they are pillars of the North Korean society, but to study the universality of North Korea as a socialist country and the uniqueness of its monolithic ideology as a Suryongcentric system.
In other words, since 1967, “Sea of Blood”-style revolutionary opera was utilized as a mechanism to create new human types of North Korea who embodies the relationship of “leader and mass” while showing “collectivism” during its process of establishing North Korea’s ideological monolithism. In order to execute this process in an efficient manner, it was delivered through art; more specifically through opera, which is a genre of music. Opera was a suitable for “emotion training” of mass due to its narrative structure combined with music, which can influence emotion. Based on the universal effects of music fused with North Korea’s uniqueness, the style “Sea of Blood” revolutionary opera was created. This process can be confirmed through the analysis of the components of “Sea of Blood”-style revolutionary opera such as script, music, dance and the operation of stage drawings.
This research found out that this process was accomplished while North Korea’s politics and economy were stable. A large opera such as “Sea of Blood”-style revolutionary opera could not have been completed without a stable political and economic foundation, which is why the intention of North Korea’s leadership in creating a unified monolithic ideology in North Korean society was effective. The current political and economic situation of North Korea is difficult compared to the 1970s, thus it is expected to be impossible for North Korea to create a major production in par with the level of completion in contents and structure as before. Nevertheless, North Korea needs a new production more than ever which has the story to unite the people as one. A basic tendency of the human psyche is the expectation of something new and without satisfying this inclination there cannot be a social consensus for collective emotion. In turn, this suggests that the conditions of an art piece can indicate the social stability of North Korea.
