The study examines the results of a needs analysis carried out for the development of an English course for engineering students at the University of Seoul. A total of 24 professors and 93 students from the engineering department participated in the survey and the results were compared. There were divergent opinions as well as conflicting expectations about the English curriculum from each party. The students weighed upon the practical component of the program such as a daily conversation and writing a resume. However, the professors put more value on its academic needs such as discussing at a conference or writing a paper. The professors preferred the subject of engineering while the students gave priority to the general topics. Based on these findings, theme-based and genre-based approach are recommended. The findings suggest that the professors and the students’ different needs should be balanced, accommodated, and recognized for each party in the curriculum development.
