As teacher reflection becomes important in teacher education, this study addresses the question of how teachers modify their beliefs about teaching and adjust their classroom teaching practices through reflective journals. Six teachers participated in journal writing and interviews while they were teaching college level English courses. The findings of this study show that the teachers’ implementation of communicative language teaching principles was a process of resolving tension between theory and practice. The study shows the benefits of reflection as a tool to construct and assess teachers’ beliefs about teaching. The findings of the study suggest a need to further explore teachers’ evolving beliefs of teaching through the process of teacher reflection.
