From a conversation analytic perspective, this paper examines how a set of lexical items are used as a resource for ensuring closure or re-closure in ordinary conversation. I specifically focus on examining Korean pro-predicates kulehta (‘be so’) and kulihata/kuleta (‘do so’) as a case in point. How the target items serve as a closure-implicative resource is discussed in two parts. The first part considers the multi-dimensional utility of pro-predicates as a closing device by demonstrating how they are deployed in multiple generic organizational domains. With a narrower focus, the second part discusses how they are implicated in turn organization as a device for completing or re-completing a turn constructional unit and for exiting or re-exiting an extended turn. Overall, Korean pro-predicates are formulated in a way that makes their own relevance to various local interactional contexts where they are deployed. The paper concludes with a brief discussion of pedagogical implications for teaching Korean to speakers of other languages.
