The purpose of the current study is to examine the interactional benefits of writing conferences in an intermediate composition class at a university in Korea. Eight students were asked to write a persuasive essay and participate in two separate one-on-one writing conference sessions with the instructor. The conferences were audio recorded and transcribed by the researcher, and the transcripts were analyzed to determine the level of student negotiation in the conferences. Despite findings which indicate a significant correlation between the amount of the negotiations made in the conferences and the analytic scores on their subsequent drafts, the researcher discovered that students needed more careful and explicit guidance throughout the entire conference program. While a writing conference approach may be a desirable component in an L2 writing course, instructors should provide specific directions and instructions on how to effectively prepare for the conference before, during, and after the actual conference sessions.
