This study examines (1) how effective technology-based English language learning affects elementary through college students in Korea; (2) what factors are involved in facilitating the effectiveness; and 3) what potential moderators systematically account for between study variations. In addition, it aims to synthesize characteristics of studies, technology use, and research methods from empirical research studies for a comprehensible and insightful review of the effect of technology use in EFL teaching and learning in Korea. Meta-analysis was conducted to synthesize the overall findings of empirical studies by calculating a standardized mean difference effect size. On the basis of 57 weighted mean effect sizes, results (weighted effect size of 0.28) demonstrate that technology can have a positive effect on EFL learning in Korea; and yet because of the diversity of the study characteristics, it is hard to make conclusions about the between study variation. The results revealed that interactions between learners as well as interactions between learners and instructors were found to be statistically significant. Age of participants and year of publication were also identified as significant factors across these meta-analyzed studies. Implications are discussed for future research.
