Article 14 does in the UCP 600 what the old Article 13 in the UCP 500. It establishes the basic responsibility of the banks to examine documents tendered under letters of credit. This study finds that the article 14 in UCP 600 with respect to the provision of examination of the presented documents seem to provide better simplicity and clarity to the banks. The main provision of the UCP 600 article 14 concerning the examination of documents are as follows. First, the expression “appear on their face” was removed from the rules except one place. Secondly, “reasonable time” was deleted and the maximum number of banking days available for banks to examine documents had been limited to five banking days from seven banking days following the day of presentation. The removal of “reasonable time”, not to exceed seven han king days“ for checking documents and its replacement by five banking days should shorten the process. Third, the address of applicant and beneficiary appearing in any stipulated document need not be the same as long as they are within the same country. Fourth, the Issuer of transport documents can be a freight forwarder and NVOCC, etc. This study is to contribute to the enhancement of understanding of UCP 600 article 14 for examination of documents.
