Supplier development has been increasingly perceived as an important source of competitive advantages. The quality and cost of a product or service offered in the market is a function, not only of the capabilities of the firm, but also the supplier network providing inputs to the enterprise. One of the supplier development programs is operational knowledge transfer activities. Even with the rich literatures on knowledge management, we still don’t know about how the degree of complementariness and change in production know-how affects the choice of mechanism for its transfer. Transfer of complementary knowledge becomes much more complicated when it changes often. We need more research in this area, particularly to help production and operations managers who must ultimately Lise the new knowledge and change their companies’ production processes.
The study suggests a framework as a step in that direction. The framework focuses on the interplay between the level of complementariness and the rate of change of production know-how, and identified tour zones tor classifying production know-how. The study examines the effectiveness of knowledge transfer and appropriate absorptive capabilities for each zone. Implications of the framework for future theory building and management practices are discussed.
