Waste water samples were collected from nine different types of industries in Chittagong, Bangladesh to determine the chemical properties of hydrogen ion concentration (pH), electrical conductivity (EC), total dissolved solid (TDS), nutrients and heavy metal contents namely iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), arsenic (As) and lead (Pb) for assessing their potentiality for irrigation by observing the effects of waste water on seed germination of Amaranthus tricolor L cv. BARI Lal Shak-1. Chemical properties were analyzed in Soil Science department and central laboratory of Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh. Alkaline waste water (pH 5.75 to 10.80) of leather, dyeing and textile industries were found highly unsuitable for irrigation where As and Pb were also found unacceptable level. The TDS of leather, textile and dyeing (3495, 3560 and 3642 ㎎ L<SUP>-1</SUP> respectively) and the EC values of textile and dyeing industries (5495 and 4483 μS ㎝<SUP>-1</SUP> respectively) waste water found in harmful level for irrigation than the recommended value of TDS (450~2000 ㎎ L<SUP>-1</SUP>) and EC (200~700 μS ㎝<SUP>-1</SUP>) by FAO. Highest germination 75% was found in the waste water of ceramic industry where in case of textile and dyeing industries were nil. The average germination (40.77%) was much lower than standard rate (80%). The result suggests that industrial waste water decreases the seed germination rate and waste water of textile and dying were highly unsuitable for irrigation purpose. Other industrial waste water may be discharged into irrigation system after removing physical and chemical constituents through proper treatment.
