Despite the frequent use of mesocosms as a tool to simulate lake behaviour, there is a paucity of critical evaluation of their relevance and similarity to the natural ecosystems they seek to emulate. The objective of this study was to test for similarity of selected water quality variables between mesocosm pairs and between lake and mesocosm pairs using a temporal coherence approach. The statistic used to denote similarity was temporal coherence, which was computed for ten water quality variables in Lake Okaro over a period of 30 days. Temporal coherence ranged from low to high across the variables at 6 m depth. Values for temporal coherence were mostly lower for surface waters. Temporal coherence between pairs of mesocosms was higher than between mesocosms and the lake. Duration of the experiment, design of mesocosms and the specific variable measured are considered to be important influences on the degree of temporal coherence. Our methodology provides a useful means to compare similarity between experimental controls and the natural ecosystem to which the results are intended to be extrapolated.
