American orientalists were heavily influenced by European orientalists and inevitably saw the orient through the European orientalist discourse. Such European influences colored the nineteenth century American intellectual circles as a whole.
While American Orientalism had been made possible by the massive influence of European orientalism, American orientalism also took its own unique shape with multiple cultural factors influencing its reception. In other words, while the seed of orientalism might be transported from Europe, it developed in American soil. One of the factors that prepared a seedbed for the growth of American orientalsm was unitarianism. The Unitarians believed that humans have the potential to be good. The Unitarians opened the way for the Transcendentalists to become interested in Asian religions. Orientalism became one of the basic elements of Transcendentalism. American orientalism continued to flourish and was further complicated by the intellectual and religious ferment of the latter part of the nineteenth century.
