The endless developments on scientific technologies lead the communication around the world faster and more active through sharing enormous information and knowledge. Regards to this, the barriers in society, such as in politics, economy and culture, are collapsing. Even the barriers between eastern and western world are only left in geographic aspects, and those two worlds are already developing into a certain united progress in social and cultural aspects. But these changes seem like a westernization of eastern world, not the balanced combination through developments. The eastern world, which preserved the aspects of nationalism, is now absorbing the aspects of colonialism through the waves of globalization. And insensitive cultural acceptance, which powered by fantasies of colonialism, is now shaking the social and cultural basis of eastern world.
The universal images of western world, which were previously delivered to eastern world from media related to art and culture, are usually described as a target of admiration which depicts the lives actively living in highly developed society. But the images of eastern world were quite different. The images of eastern world are still described as ‘the others’, a target of civilization which depicts the lives uncivilized and under-developed. This perception of western world is psychologically based on the desire to prove the superiority and promote the advantages to stabilize their culture by setting ‘the others’ on the other side of the earth. This certain ideology, which is revealed as orientalism, is frequently appeared from movies. Most of the images of eastern world, which are depicted throughout the movies, work only for motivations to justify their heroic events and realize their superior status. These kind of images might be the reality out of fantasy, while we consider the power of cultural effects of the movies.
The original concept of orientalism is the developed form with balance in art and culture, which derived from the cultural exchanges between the aesthetic values, ideologies or philosophies of eastern world and western art. So we should understand the current status and the reason why the potential messages from the orientalism are distorted in the movies. We need to confirm and re-establish the specific identification on orientalism through the continuous and in depth studies now, and we, who related to the movies, also need to be cautious and realize the negatively distorted images of eastern world. A step further, devotions on delivering the right cultural values through sharing exact informations are also required to achieve the balanced developments between the both worlds.
