In this paper I analyze the nonresidential market of green building in the US and green growth and sustainable growth within the management literature. In particular, I analyze the focus of construction cost efficiency in green building. I also present market research of US nonresidential green construction from 2001 to 2008 and derive the relative importance of cost efficiency for the benefit of green building. Growth rates across the nonresidential building segments reveal construction industry stakeholders are beginning to embrace the green movement. My research demonstrates that, for each type of green buildings, the importance of cost efficiency rather than other traditional factors affecting the performance of building construction would be different. In addition, I can expect that initial construction costs would be more important than long-term operating expenses for green building.
