Even though international marriage has been on the increasing trend since the 1990s, foreign workers and international marriage families have been regarded as the socially and economically alienated class in the Korean society. And this trend shows a sign of being permanent. As a result, adaption to Korean housing conditions among women who immigrated to Korea for international marriage has been a matter for not only such women but also all of their family members, which ends up with the issue for social integration. However, the Support for multi-cultural Families Act does not stipulate the policy on anything related to housing (house) that is the most essential to human life. Therefore, it is certainly required to have policy discussion and establish relevant systems in order to secure housing stability for marriage-related immigrant women along with provision of pleasant housing conditions to them.
The number of international marriages has increased gradually in all of 18 cities and counties in Gangwon Province. In particular, it was found that a significant number of marriage-related immigrant women had resided in the cities of Wonju, Chuncheon and Gangneung. But the spatial scope in this study was limited to Chuncheon City. This study targeted marriage-related immigrant women who may be considered as socially disadvantaged people to investigate housing conditions and their housing satisfaction before and after their immigration for marriage. Based on comparison and analysis of the differences between before and after the immigration, this study intended to realize improvement of housing right for marriage-related immigrant women.
