This study is designed to investigate the effectiveness of multimedia instruction on teaching skills in alphabet-recognition, listening, reading, and writing to EFL learners at the elementary level. In addition, the effectiveness is examined from the perspective of affective domain. The multimedia instruction was implemented with an experimental group who were compared to a control group that received text-oriented traditional instruction. The subjects were 59 children in the 8th grade at G elementary school in Gyeonggi-Do. The experimental group turned out to display higher interest and confidence in their learning than those of the control group. At the same time, the experiment group was found to exhibit better performance on the test of alphabet-recognition, listening, reading and the writing, compared with the test performance of the control group. The result of This experimental study show a significant difference in the EFL learners’ ability in alphabet-recognition and writing in accordance with the difference in instructional method: multimedia instruction vs traditional text-oriented instruction. Based on the higher achievement of the experimental group via multimedia instruction, this study further claims that mutimedia instruction excells in instructional effectiveness in teaching listening and reading abilities to EFL learners at the elementary level. Moreover, the implementation of multimedia instruction turned out to positively enhance the learners’ attitude toward EFL learning.
