The motivation stems from being surfeited with the lack of completeness of a numerous CGE model analyses carried out in Korea since 1999. This paper focuses on the prospective effects of the Korea-Japan FTA on the division of labor structure by major industry. We shows that any discourse on the problem of trade imbalance that may arise from the Korea-Japan FTA and its solutions cannot be complete if we are to focus on the trade relations of the past and then evaluate the expected impacts of direct investment on production, domestic sales and exports as well as how the impacts will ultimately influence and improve market accessibility between the two countries. Specifically, we seek to identify the patterns and direction of the intra-industry trade (IIT) between Korea and Japan using the KOTIS Data base classified by Mil Code, showing a trend of expansion since the mid-nineties due to the rise in competitive power of Korean companies and Japan’s direct investment and technology cooperation with Korea. And then we will show d1at these items contributing to the increase in IIT are not expected to suffer due to additional reduction or abolition of tariffs through Korea-Japan FTA tariff negotiations, but in the mid and long term the intra-industry trade will be strengthened if non-tariff measures are abolished even though products and parts industries that are in the initial stages of technology development will experience losses in the short term. Moreover, if a Korea-Japan FTA can secure not only a systemic and non-systemic cooperative framework and specific executive measures for the vitalization of bilateral investment in each country basis but also a strategic region-wide cooperation in Northeast Asia especially on the intermediate sectors competing each other, the vertical structure of division that we have within each sector today will be sophisticated in the near future.
