How global is global history actually? This is not a question to be concluded from the concept itself, but a question to be analysed on multiple levels. This paper approaches global history not as a comprehensive, de-centralized, objective history, but as an epistemological paradigm with ideological implications. In order to disclose and explore these intercepted implications, global history paradigm is divided into three major subparadigms, i.e. world/global history as inter-history, world system theory and global history from below.
A balance sheet contrasting each sub-paradigm’s problems and arguments introduced in this paper shows that an active experiment for developing unlimited numbers of narrative strategies, depending on various themes and periods, by cross-fertilizing these three sub-paradigms is needed more than attempts to find one ideal type of global history. If we give up this fixation on the nominality of global history, even concepts with teleological connotations like cultural borders could serve as an excellent conduit for writing global history.
