『Dongso Man’rok(桐巢漫錄)』 was written to document and reevaluate the political activities of the Southerners(Nam’in/南人) party during the reign of King Yeongjo. In order to do that, Nam Ha-jeong(南夏正) turned his attention upon the political purge that took place in the Gi’chuk-year(“Gi’chuk Oksa/己丑獄事”). This incident turned out to be an especially important event in the history of Joseon politics, as the Westerners party(Seo’in/西人) seized political power with this purge, while the party itself was eventually divided into the “Elder” faction(No’ron/老論) and the “Junior” faction(So’ron/少論). Nam Ha-jeong not only perceived this incident as a conflict over authority and power, but recognized it as an event in which the philosophical and ideological differences between the two factions were finally pushed to the surface. In that regard, his political awareness is worthy of further discussion.
It should be noted that Nam Ha-jeong ultimately wanted to redeem the entire Southerners party, and resuscitate their activities inside the government. The primary charge made against the Southerners in the first place was that they had violated the “Righteous cause”(“Myeong’eui/名義”) and perpetrated an unforgivable crime. So Nam emphasized the fact that the Southerners had not done anything of the sort, and that they did try to protect the Crown-prince. But even with all such arguments, having the Southerners reenter the government was not an easy task, especially when the opposing party was in power. Therefore, he dug up some interesting cases from the history of the past, and found a poster character which would highlight the very problems of the now-distorted “Tangpyeong(蕩平)” attempts, which have strayed away from its original intentions by excluding the “Jun’ron[Prioritizing Strict Adherence to the Original Spirit of Equitable “Tang’pyeong” Assignments of Officials]” supporters and especially the Southerners entirely. Nam also highlighted King Yeongjo’s political leadership, as in his eyes he had accepted that poster person for the fact that such person was a capable governmental official. 『Dongso Man’rok』 presents Nam Ha-jeong’s exceptional insights on the political history of this era.
