The spatio-temporal change of Yongdusan Park, a representational space in Busan, is in accord with the spatio-temporal order in Busan: the birth of Busan as a modern city by Japanese ruling, Busan as a compressed growth model in the era of Park Jung-Hee, and Busan groping for the shift toward a post-modern space by citizens under the local autonomy system. This study focuses on the relation of Yongdusan Park with Busan, especially since the 1970s, examining the various subjects having planned and experienced the park and the aspects of space representation.
The appearance of ‘Busan Tower’ is the spatial representation of Mt. Yongdu in the 1970s. Busan Tower, as can be seen from the naming, summons up Busan actively, but its logic of the vertical division of space is easily joined to the vertical and hierarchical state enlightenment discourse. Since the 1990s, the activities trying to represent the various memories of Yongdusan Park have been performed by the public-private joint efforts or the voluntary civic subjects. Diverse cultural spaces have been displayed in the park, and from this I can verify that the vertically-divided space around Busan Tower is disintegrated and a horizontal enlargement is attempted. In this way, the spatial representations and cultural activities by the local subjects can give a new meaning to Yongdusan Park.
