This paper shows the development of a tactile map called Haptic Sight for Busan-Gimhae Light Transit and mostly describes the concept and exterior design of a tactile map in the sense of mass production including the refining of the technical details along with its commercial value. Haptic Sight provides walking related-information to the visually impaired in the form of the sense of touch. Haptic Sight, a vast array of bumps which is similar to Braille and is characterized by the bumps’ vertical motion, provides a linear moving path and information for one’s surroundings through the sense of touch. Information about the surroundings is of crucial importance, especially since the information is presented in the form of tactile symbols that function as an universal language in the society of visually impaired people, similar to the concept of a pictogram. When the social degeneration of the digital divide for the visually impaired despite recent technological and sociological improvements is noted, the aim of the study which is to develop the design of an assistive device to support the visually-impaired’s independent walking, is expected to be quite significant. Moreover, the development of Haptic Sight of using a kind of tactile symbol mark for unspecified visually-impaired individuals to communicate with each other is expected to be used as the foundation of future studies and to function as an accelerator to stimulate subsequent researches on the walking assistive device industry for visually-impaired people.
