Marx argued that the science of nature would in time subsume the science of man, just as the science of man would subsume the science of nature. This paper attempts to examine Marx"s thoughts concerning ‘one single science’ which he imagined would come later. So far, many critics have contended that ‘one single science’ takes on some traits of positivism or scientism, and so did very famous thinkers of different dispositions such as J. Habermas, L. Althusser, A. Badiou, and I. Wallerstein. However, they failed to get the full grasp of the concept of Marx"s ‘new materialism’, thereby leading to a serious misunderstanding of his view of science. The paper tries to make it clear that Marx"s insights concerning ‘one single science’ are based on ‘new materialism’, which has features of ‘anti-philosophy’ as well as ‘anti-system.’
Basically, Marx"s ‘new materialism’ challenges the positivist premises on the nature of science. Furthermore, it implicitly addresses the problems of the traditional view of truth which identifies human perception with objects themselves. So the well-known proposition of materialist thought, “being determines consciousness”, should also be understood in this context. Marx argued that science or thinking in general is one particular activity among many human-sensuous activities undertaken by a natural, intelligent organism in its engagement with the real world outside it. He advocated ‘one science’, by claiming that scientific thinking is one moment among others of the processes of life, and also one way to creative realization of human praxis. He suggested the end of philosophy, laying a special emphasis on the importance of human-sensuous activity in search of the objective truth. His way of thinking, connecting praxis with truth, turns out to have overthrown the general frame of Western traditional philosophy.
