As of March of 2008, the number of registered people with disabilities in Korea amounted to 2.137 million, up 123.1% compared to late December of 2000, which recorded 958,000. In terms of number of disability types, it has also increased to 15 types as of 2008 from 5 in 2000.
As you can see from this trend, disability groups for policy formulation have expanded and diversified, which leads to increased needs towards more individualized and professional policy services. This also has increased needs for disability data which serve as a foundation for scientific decision-making when identifying disability needs, formulating policy, and assessing the effects of the policy.
However, as disability statistics are disperse, policy-makers and researchers who use them have many difficulties in finding suitable information. In Particular, when they refer to foreign disability data, they feel more difficulties. Furthermore, different data processing operations, different contents, different definition among statistics cause confusion to the users.
In this regard, the aim of 「2008 Disability Statistics」 is to compile and examine status of domestic disability statistics and even related foreign data as of now. I expect that this paper provides policy-makers and researcher with information about disability statistics and offer statisticians useful tips in identifying the flow and direction of disability statistics when they plan related statistics.
The specific objectives of this paper is to provide raw data for disability-related policy-making and research by reviewing diverse statistics which can identify current domestic disability status. To this end, this paper covers overall disability data in terms of population, employment, welfare, education, society. This paper also dealt with foreign disability statistics such as the Japan, U.S., EU in order to compare them with domestic case.
The second objective of this paper is to provide complete overview of disabilityrelated data in order for the users to take full and convenient advantage of the information. To achieve this goal, this paper offers explanation such as citation, comments in the statistical chart and explanation about survey and indicators in the appendix. In addition, references are included to help users search for the information for themselves.
