With a clear inheritance of different versions, Mencius has relatively reliable language materials, a basically clear history of its corpus and a language style that is close to the actual language of that time. As works of the Warring States period, Mencius has a very high value for linguisticstudy. There are two basic jobs for the study on synonyms. One is to verify similarities, and the other is to differentiate differences. While the research on the similarities of synonyms is of course important, it is more important to study their differences. That is to say, it is of greater importance to study the subtle nuances between synonyms. Those nuances are mainly reflected by the distinguishing characteristics of those synonyms. On the basis of a comprehensive study on the monosyllabic synonymous content words in Mencius, this paper sums up 14 distinctive features of synonyms which are reflected by the semantic, syntactic and pragmatic aspects.
