The purposes of the current study is (1) to evaluate the validity of the smartphone dependency scale that we developed for this study; and (2) to assess the effects of smartphone dependency on how individuals use traditional media and talk with others (strong-ties and weak-ties). The study was based on the survey interview data collected from 1301 smartphone users in the Greater Seoul during the summer 2012. Based on a series of confirmatory factor analyses and structural equation model analyses, the results showed that (1) the smartphone dependency measure was both valid and reliable having seven goal dimensions―self- understanding, social understanding, action orientation, interaction orientation, solitary play, social play and self-expression; (2) individuals with high level of overall smartphone dependency were more likely to watch TV contents through a TV set and have time to talk with family or relatives(strong-ties); and (3) each of the seven smartphone dependency goals had varying effects on traditional media use and interpersonal talk showing both reinforcement effects(especially social play on TV use, social understanding on newspaper use, and social understanding on talk with weak-ties) and replacement effects(especially, solitary understanding and play on talk with both weak-ties and self-expression on both TV and newspaper uses).
