Until now, the emotion of sadness reflected in Sowol’s poetry has been understood as an emotional expression of discontinuous world view. Like the tendency of romanticism in the poetry of 1920s, Sowol’s poetry is composed based on the poet’s painful awareness of ‘human being/nature, subject/ object, self/world, individual/society, and civilization/nature.’ However, Sowol does not stop at emotionally expressing a sense of loss for the self from the absurdity of the modern world. Through the medium of sadness, he shows that the origin of the world, which was thought to be lost, can be felt emerging faintly here and there even now. Instead of vaguely longing for an ideal world outside reality to heal the pain, he insists that the sacred essence of life, which is hard to be experienced in daily life, emerges only when one endures all disgrace and pain and attempts to arrive at the saddest moment of reality. The negativity of reality (sadness) is trans- formed from a target that must be conquered to a foundation of happiness and a positive opportunity for joy. Sowol’s ‘Jyoheun Seulpeum (Good Sadness)’ shows the moment of perceptional change when the poet realize the fact that the richness of life, which seemed to have been lost, still subsist as existence. Such reasoning of sadness creates the poetic structure that allows openness of meaning, in which the meaning of binary oppositional concepts are not determined by either side but that the polarity(discontinuity) itself is nullified. Through this unique poetic structure, Sowol’s poetry does not present meanings such as ‘meeting/ parting, happiness/sadness, brightness/darkness, and life/death’ as oppositional to each other but reveals that they mutually embrace each other and form the relationship of ‘one (totality).’
