The Tangzhiyan 唐?言―Collected Statements in Tang China― is a mid-tenth-century collection of anecdotes about Tang literati, with special emphasis on incidents relating to the civil-service examination system. The author of this book, Wang Dingbao 王定保(870～940), took his jinshi 進士degree in 900.
The anecdotes in the Tangzhiyan are grouped under 103 disparate topics in fifteen juan 卷. Concluding many of the sections is a lun ?or zan ?, offering Wang Dingbao’s own reflections (usually moralistic) on the preceding stories and accounts.
The Tangzhiyan provides important information on the official examination system, particularly the various presentations, banquets, and other formal occasions that a prospective or successful degree-holder normally participated in during his heady months at the capital. Because it is very detailed in this matter, the Tangzhiyan can serve as a historiographical source. It also included a lot of quotations from the writings of poets and scholars, which can not be found in other sources.
