This paper examined the frequency of hedges used by men, women, high school graduates, and college graduates, in the spoken and written texts of ICE-GB. The findings are that women used hedges more frequently than men in both spoken and written texts, that high school graduates used more hedges than college graduates in spoken texts, and that college graduates used more hedges than high school graduates in written texts. Female high school graduates and male college graduates, in the spoken texts, were found to use hedges the most and least respectively. But, in the written texts, female college graduates and male high school graduates were analyzed to use hedges the most and least respectively. The findings from the analysis of hedges in the spoken texts can be interpreted to support the difference approach to ‘women’s language’ rather than the dominance approach. But the findings from the analysis of hedges in the written texts do not support either of the two approaches.
