The purpose of this research was to estimate the relationship between the demand for subway transit and urban spatial characteristics in the subway station area. The pattern changes of the relationships by redefining the spatial boundaries of the subway station area were the main interests of this study. This research was conducted by literature review, GIS analysis and statistical analysis. Four regression models were estimated to investigate the relationships. The following conclusions were derived from the regression model analyses. First, the relationships between the demand for subway transit and urban spatial characteristics in the subway station area were affected by changing the boundaries of station areas. Secondly, physical attributes promoting pedestrian activities were effective within the boundary of 400m radius from the station. Thirdly, development density measure was not significantly related to the demand for subway transit.
