This paper searches for a global historical innovation of the writing of East Asian history. As a departure point, it critically reflects on Indian Ocean studies. The main problems in this historiography may be summarized in two ways. One problem is the periodical inclination of Indian Ocean studies toward the pre-colonial period. This might be another expression of Eurocentrism which takes a strong European hegemony in this region for granted so that all other intra-regional developments are overlooked. The other problem is an epistemological or political inclination. Although researchers of Indian Ocean history do not pursue an explicitly political goal as participants in the East Asian discourse do, they are relatively focused upon a peaceful and harmonious image of the Indian Ocean trade and intra-regional relationships. This is a persistent perspective which continues from Janet Abu-Lughod to PrasenjitDuara, who recently forwarded the “Asia Redux” thesis.
Based upon critical reflections on these problems, the global historical methodology and the narrative of East Asian history can be searched for in two ways. One is not only extending East Asian history study to the colonial period, but also liberating it from being a footnote to European imperial history. The post-colonialist concept and its analytical framework can be useful in this context, since it has contributed to reinterpreting the relationship between the metropole and the colony, and, further, to rewriting even the history of the metropole. The other is writing the much-overlooked regional political dynamics and the unequal power relationships into the history of peaceful and harmonious commercial and cultural transactions. The traditional tributary system can serve as an excellent subject to illuminate the relationship between the trade and the intra-regional political interests, because it entangled numerous East Asian countries with one another so to regulate the inter-state relationship diplomatically and with violence, if necessary.
