There were lots of studies to reduce the Transport Energy Consumption(TEC). However, there was a limit to apply to Korea because these studies had been performed in the selected and limited area, and didn’t consider the individual characteristics of cities and treated all cities as same. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to analysis the influencing factors of urban characteristics on TEC by city types classified as travel pattern and development density. Through the cluster analysis, ‘Regional central cities’, ‘Regional subcities’ and ‘Outer regions’ had been identified. Each derived model by regression analysis has sufficient explanatory power compared to previous studies and those clusters have different influencing factors on TEC by city types. First, TEC in all clusters are increased as automobile dependence and IC·JC per 100,000 are increased. Second, Population density is no longer meaningful in ‘Regional central cities’, but the other variables are related with TEC such as the rate of urban areas, business and residential density, and so on. Third, population density as well as the rate of employment affect TEC in ‘Regional subcities’. Lastly, TEC in ‘Outer regions’ is related with the rate of employment, the rate of farmland and housing density. As conclusion, we suggested to consider the urban individual characteristics in establishing the policies for reducing TEC.
