This article is a study on the Iconography of Maitraya as greeting-figure(來迎像) in the Northern Dynasties, based on "the three Sutra of Maitreya(彌勒三部經)". Korean monk Ky?ngheung (憬興) classified on his book about the devotee of Maitraya Buddhism into small groups of upper-(上品), middle-(中品), lower-class(下品), which are different of reincarnation place after their death.
The 191 Cave at the Maijishan Grottoes was beginning to make for niche in the Western Wei Dynasty, which is composed with three Maitreya figures, which are bhadrasana figure as main Buddha and two Maitreya with crossed legs as assistant Bodhsattva. I tried that three Maitreya figures of 191 Cave at the Maijishan Grottoes were combined with iconography of greeting-Maitreya figures in Yungang Grottoes. I guess that the culture of Northern Wei-Buddhism plugged into Western Wei-Buddhism continually. The assistant figure of the 191 Cave is regarded as Bodhisattva Maitreya which is greeting the lower class of devotee of Maitreya Buddhism. And the main figure is regarded as Buddha Maitreya which is greeting the middle class of devotee. Both devotees should be keeping the buddhistic rules in order to be reincarnated on the heavenly paradise Tusita or the land of jambudvipa.
