Nitrogen is one of the main contaminants in wastewater and the indiscriminate disposal of nitrogen causes eutrophication of a water body thereby threatening aquatic life and public health concern. The conventional biological nitrogen removal process is widely used for wastewater treatment. However, the conventional biological nitrogen removal process has some drawbacks as it often suffers from the competition between aerobic and anaerobic denitrifying microorganisms for the available organics as wastewater usually contains low carbon- to-nitrogen ratios. In this case, microbial fuel cell (MFC) technology has drawn much attention as a new approach of wastewater treatment. The MFC technology has been emerging as a novel and promising technology to simultaneously treat wastewater while generating electricity. The MFC technology can be used to generate electricity from various biodegradable organic materials, ranging from pure to complex compounds mixtures of organic materials present in various wastes and waste streams. In recent years, reduction of nitrate and nitrite has been demonstrated in the cathodic compartment of a MFC, which creates opportunities for a new technology for nitrogen removal from wastewater. This paper reviewed the removal of nitrogen using MFC. Furthermore the opportunities and challenges pertaining to use of nitrite and nitrate in MFC have been highlighted.
