The purpose of this study is to analyze Korean college students’ perceptions of verb complement alternations in English. Some cognitive-functional grammarians maintain that the choice of to- infinitive or bare-infinitive, for NP to-infinitive or NP to-infinitive and that S V or S V in verb complement constructions is determined by semantic or pragmatic differences between the two types. Based on this line of claim, this paper examines Korean college students’ perception of meaning differences between minimal pair clausal complements of English verbs. 153 college students answered the specially designed questionnaire dealing with semantic and pragmatic differences caused by verb complement alternations. The results of the study show that there is no significant difference in the students’ perception of the differences at issue. It is also found that the majority of Korean students preferred to-infinitive and that-maintenance clauses because they felt that the two are more familiar and easier to identify than bare-infinitive and that-omission clauses. This study suggests that various constructions related to verb complements be presented in the classroom and teachers explain the meaning differences between them more explicitly. Several pedagogical implications were also discussed and the need for further research was proposed.
