The effects of dual cam phasing on engine performance in a small gasoline turbo engine were investigated at 2000rpm full load condition. Full load performance was found to be strongly but non-linearly dependent on the calibration of dual cam phaser in multiple mechanisms. Because of high intake boost pressure and high exhaust manifold pressure, not only how much intake air flow is increased but also how well the residual gas is scavenged during gas exchange process and how knock can be mitigated by reducing effective compression ratio were found to determine the performance.
When exhaust valve timing was advanced, cylinder to cylinder exhaust pulse interaction could be increased because increased blow-down pressure pulse can reach end of previous firing cylinder’s exhaust stroke. When exhaust valve closing timing was retarded, IMEP was increased due to increased expansion ratio, but PMEP was relatively more increased due to increased exhaust pressure during exhaust process. As intake valve timing is retarded, the effective compression ratio was reduced and spark timing could be advanced, but intake air flow was decreased.
The improved scavenging by retarded exhaust valve timing and mitigated knock by retarding intake valve timing could lead to 6 deg faster MFB50% and 4.5% IMEP improvement at same spark timing even though intake flow was reduced by 1% and bypassing fuel through exhaust valve increased hydrocarbon and smoke emissions, compared with base condition.
