Dental impression materials should have adequate rheological properties to allow adequate mix and flow through mixing tip and allow penetration to every detail of the mouth. It should flow easily into the interproximal surfaces, sulcus areas, and sharp line angles, Moreover, after setting, it should have sufficient tear strength, elasticity, dimensional stability, accuracy, and adequate strain in compression property for respective clinical situations. This study investigated for the mechanical and rheological properties of commercially leading auto-mixing addition polymerization silicone rubber impression materials. Six types of low-viscosity (LV) addition silicone materials [Aquasil LV, Bisico super-hydrophil S4, Charmflex, Exahiflex, Examixfine, Provil NOVO fast-set, and two types of medium-viscosity (MV) materials [Aquasil monophase, Honigum automix-mono] were evaluated. Viscosities of base and catalyst pastes, viscosity changes with the elapsed time after mixing the two pastes, tensile strength, and permanent deformation were evaluated for five replicate samples. For the evaluation of the shear thinning effects of the materials, the viscosity changes with the elapsed time after mixing were measured at rotor rotation speeds of 1 rpm and 10 rpm. The percentage changes of the values were evaluated for each samples at specific time after mixing. Provil NOVO fast-set showed the lowest viscosity value among the LV materials. The base paste of Exahiflex showed rather higher viscosity than those of MV Aquasil monophase and it had relatively lower shear thinning effect, by which a difficulty on mixing was experienced. Charmflex and Provil NOVO fast-set showed greater shear thinning effect. Provil NOVO fast-set and Aquasil LV showed significantly higher tensile strength among LV materials. Moreover, Provil NOVO fast-set had low viscosity and high shear thinning effect demonstrating its desirable physical properties. The tensile strength values of MV materials were greatly different by the brand of tested materials. Charmflex showed the lowest elastic recovery value among the tested materials, and its curing rate was unfavorable for manipulation. Examixfine and Honigum had adequate curing rate. From the results obtained, it is prudent that selecting adequate material with consideration of the most required property in each specific clinical situation after getting information of the strong and weak points of each product, because the tensile strength, elasticity, setting rate, and flow characteristics of the commercial vinyl polysiloxane dental impression materials are different by the differences of types and products.
