This study is to investigate the language learning strategies (LLSs) used by 297 Korean adult ESL learners when they studied for L2 in normal situation and when they prepared for special examinations prior to study or work in UK. The results showed that Korean participants most frequently used compensation category among 6 strategy categories in N and E situations. However, the participants least frequently employed memory category in the N situation, whereas they least used affective one in the E situation. In relation to individual strategies, in all the N and E situations, MET 11 (learning skills) was the most frequent, whereas MEM 3 (using rhythm while acting out) was the least frequent. When examining differences of the participants’ LLS use between the E and the N situations, the results showed that their LLS use was more frequent in the E situation than in the N situation. Thus, Korean participants revealed that they were more strategic users when they prepared for special examinations.
