This study examined the effects of task involvement and word exposure frequency on L2 learners’ vocabulary learning. Ninety Korean college students participated in the study and they were assigned to three groups of 30 students in each. The groups were exposed to three different task conditions featuring different task involvement load with two levels of word exposure frequency. The findings revealed that tasks with higher involvement load led to better immediate and long-term learning outcomes in general. As to the exposure frequency, multiple exposure of words proved to be more effective than a singular encounter initially, and the advantage was sustained over time. No interaction effect between the task involvement and word exposure frequency was observed in the long- as well as short-term learning stages. The results also showed that vocabulary learning through reading tasks considering involvement load not only enhanced word knowledge but also changed learners’ word learning habits, which, in turn, could influence further vocabulary consolidation.
