Vietnamese Korean-learners usually find that Sino-Korean is one of the most interesting points when learning Korean. Therefore, in their writing they tend to exploit Sino-Korean as much as they do with Sino- Vietnamese in their mother tongue. Despite of being borrowed words from Chinese, Sino-Korean and Sino-Vietnamese have certain differences in meaning, usage and part of speech which make learners confused, especially in writing. With 90 writing materials collected from Vienamese learners of intermediate level, this study focuses on analyzing common Sino-Korean misuses by Vietnamese learners. The Vietnamese-Sino errors can be categorized into three groups: meaning different errors (due to backtranslation from Vietnamese), same form - different meaning error, same form ? different part of speech. By classifying Sino-Korean errors made by Vietnamese learners this study aims at applying the error analysis results not only into vocabulary learning as has been done in some studies but also in improving writing skills. For learners, by knowing the common misuses, they should be more cautious when using Sino-Korean. For instructors, the error analysis of Sino-Korean misuses can be applied to improve teaching writing skills, e.g. collecting basic same form-same meaning Sino vocabulary for elementary level and notice students not to do back-translation to make Vietnamese style Sino-Korean; acknowledging differences of meaning between same form Sino-Korean and Sino-Vietnamese, comparing and explaining the differences of meaning between same form Sino-Korean and Sino-Vietnamese for intermediate level; focusing on analysis the usage and part of speech of Sino-Korean for the advanced level and applying on writing. In summary, based on the analysis Vietnamese learners writing materials this study could propose a classification of errors of Sino-Korean. Though not being completely accurate, the classification may help both learners and teachers to enhance knowledge and improve the teaching of Korean writing skills.
