This paper gives an analysis about the research of later life preparation of Korean and Japanese elderly population. However, compared to the increasing interest in later life preparation, there is not much sufficient comparative research done between Korea and Japan. For such reason, this study should provide the readers with basic background information in later life preparation in Korea and Japan. In preceding research, there was similarities in the research background.
First, in the initial stage, the change in population structure caused by aging was considered as elderly conflicts, but later on, it changed from conflict to task, and centered to elderly desires. Second, the details of later life preparation was able to be expanded from physical, economical preparation to social, psychological preparation.
Survey showed that Korean elderly population prepared more for later life than Japanese elderly population. According to this, first, it is predicted that Japan focuses more on the life today looking from a population-social view. Second, Japan established long-term care insurance and social welfare systems to prepare for retirement and relies more on the country for social welfare system for their later life. Through the research of elderly later life preparation of Korea and Japan, it can be concluded that the need for increase in social welfare system (long-term care insurance, health insurance) to solve economic, physical, psychological, social concern is highly required.
