In the wave of modernization made based on the industrial growth of the early 19th century, urban space expanded in a quantitative respect and the consequent overcrowding emerged as a serious social problem threatening city dwellers’ right of residence and quality of life. To solve this problem, high-rise buildings that have evolved into complex and various forms began to fill the entire city. Accompanied by horizontal expansion with vertical expansion, these high-rise buildings seemed to solve urban social problems. However, in the event of fire, terrors and natural disasters in public spaces including large buildings, the limitations of the physical structure due to a complex environment caused much more risk factors. In particular, risks due to fire appear secondarily in all disasters and cause a lot of damage as a major risk factor that may occur anywhere in residential environment and complex space. In the event of fire accidents, casualties can be reduced by being evacuated as quickly as possible and to this end, it is important to properly design and place exit lights. However, it could be seen through literature and existing studies that traditional evacuation guidance lights are inadequate for efficient evacuation in the event of fires because most of them have been used conventionally. In this study, we are to divide colors more suitable for evacuation guidance lights in view of safety design for more intuitive utilization and use them in helping efficient evacuation guidance in the event of disasters. To this end, we changed the exit sign applied as green in the past to yellow and conducted an experiment to find the range of colors the most suitable in the event of fire.
The experimental results showed that colors in the range of higher chroma and brightness are the most visible even in the smoke.
This study is to correct awareness on the safety part that has been misapplied to urban space and living space close to our lives. Through this, we are to minimize safety blind spots and contribute to enhancing the quality of life for all community members through safety.
